In the September following their seventh birthday, the children move from the infant to the junior department as they enter Form 3 and begin work in Key Stage 2.
During this year, National Curriculum subjects such as Science, History, Geography, ICT, Art, Spanish, RE and PSHCE are covered in depth. However, priority is given to Mathematics and Literacy. The three areas covered in Mathematics are mechanical, mental and problems, and the four areas in Literacy are grammar, comprehension, creative writing and spellings. The children’s reading is also listened to on a daily basis and they achieve a reading and spelling age much higher than their chronological age.
The children continue to receive PE lessons from a qualified specialist and also enjoy a weekly Lacrosse session. The children start their weekly swimming lessons during the Spring Term.
Music is an important part of the curriculum in Form 3, in that the children not only have a class music lesson every week but many of them also have individual instrumental lessons such as piano, violin and trumpet.
As a special bonding session at the beginning of the school year, the children get to go on a residential outdoor activity to Patterdale Hall in the Lake District, where a good time is had by all – teachers included.
