Now located in Monton, Branwood Prep. School was founded in Eccles, Manchester in 1928. We are an independent, co-educational day preparatory school catering to children between the ages of three and eleven.
All members of our community, staff, governors and trustees, ensure that both pupils and parents receive the very highest standards of education. The pupils are happy, thoughtful and caring towards each other and work very hard to achieve excellent results. Parents are supportive of our school and work closely with staff to ensure the very best for their children.
Our children are happy, inquisitive and energetic – they enjoy being children in their educational environment. They learn to be part of their community, to live and work together, to share the traditional values of courtesy and good manners, to respect others, to have confidence, to think for themselves and to stand up for what they believe to be right. As a preparatory school we prepare our children for their lives ahead. The children learn to grasp every opportunity offered to them and they leave Branwood justifiably proud of their school and their achievements.
The heart of the school lies in academic excellence but as part of the educational process and the development of the ‘whole child’ we also provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities which are taught or coached by specialist, qualified staff, many of whom have represented their chosen activity at a national level.
Religious knowledge is taught within the school to provide pupils with an understanding of all faiths and worldviews. In keeping with the school’s teachings on social, moral, spiritual and cultural life, assemblies are broadly secular in nature but we do take advantage of important festivals and celebrations to help foster understanding of our rich and diverse community.
School opens at 8.00am when children are supervised until registration at 8.35am. Following school we have extra curricular activities, as well as out of hours care with the facility to complete homework, from 3.00-5.45pm. We also offer a variety of activities during the school holidays.
Branwood Preparatory School was founded in 1928 as Branwood House School by a Miss Littlejohn. Initially the school was housed in two ‘very bare’ rooms in the Friends Meeting House on Half Edge Lane, just a stone’s throw from our current location in Monton.
When the Friends eventually needed the space themselves, the school moved to Branwood House in Clarendon Crescent. After the war in 1947, Mr Firth took over the school and when he retired in 1969, Mrs Wicks purchased the school. Subsequently, the school’s expansion resulted in her purchase of a second, additional property on Worsley Road.
In 1984 Adelphi Preparatory School on Stafford Road closed and Mr and Mrs Wicks purchased the site from the nuns, coincidentally the site of Monton House where Mrs Wicks herself was born. Both Branwood School’s existing school buildings were sold and the children and staff moved into our current purpose built premises on Stafford Road in Monton.
We are lucky to have a very active PTA at Branwood. For a smaller school we have a large number of parents involved which really brings our school community together.
The PTA organise a number of events throughout the academic year, including Christmas and Summer Fairs, Halloween Parties, Film Nights, Parents Dinners as well as sponsored events for charity.
The money raised by the PTA has been used to enhance the school grounds, with the addition of an outdoor cabin and playground equipment, all of which have been warmly received by the children.
More information about the PTA can be found on our PTA page, including how you can get involved.
