Form Five

For children aged 9-10

We teach English and Mathematics every day, covering all areas of each subject (reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar in English and arithmetic and problem solving in Mathematics). We also spend time, each week, practising Non-Verbal and Verbal Reasoning skills, in preparation for the 11+ assessments. The children get the opportunity to complete a ‘Big Write’ once a week, where they are expected to apply their newly and previously learnt skills in an independent piece of creative writing.

The academic expectations in Form 5 are high but attainable for all and tailored to the needs and abilites of each child in the class; this allows us to track the child’s progress regularly and encourage each child to accept appropriate challenges that push them to reach their full potential.

The children are able to use technology, with access to iPads; this is incoportated into their wide range of learning, sometimes in English and Mathematics lessons but more often in their learning of the Foundation subjects (Science, Humanities and Art). The children receive specialist education in the aread of Music, Physical Education, ICT and Modern Foreign Language (Spanish) and they have the ability to select to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, both at lunch time and after school. It is also possible for children to learn how to play an instrument with 1:1 tuition from a specialist musician. In the Summer term, children will partake in weekly swimming lessons at a local swimming baths; they will also have the opportunity to take part in the school play, where they get to demonstrate their creative talents in singing, drama and dance.

Homework

Homework is set daily, Monday to Friday.
It is expected that children should complete a minimum of 45 minutes homework per night, as well as nightly spelling revision and independent reading.

Children are encouraged to read independently, a minimum of 5 times a week. Parents should sign to say they have witnessed this in homework diaries.

The children write their homework task in their homework diary every evening and the task is also listed on Class Dojo, in further detail. Often, the work itself is posted on Class Dojo and children are expected to use a device to access their homework and answer it in their homework books (this is to eliminate wasteful printing and allow us, as a class to reduce our carbon footprint).

The following timetable is followed (with regard to homework):

Monday – English
Tuesday – Maths
Wednesday – English
Thursday – Maths
Friday – Maths and English

(Please bear in mind, once a week: NVR is set in place of Maths homework and VR in place of English homework. On occasion, research homework relating to a foundation subject will be set over the weekend.)

Over the school holidays (half terms, Christmas and Easter), children will be sent home with a varied pack of homework that will allow children to continue consolidating their skills in a range of subjects. Research tasks will also often be set during these periods.

The children also continue to have weekly Music, Spanish, IT and PE lessons delivered by specialist teachers. They also participate in Forest School sessions fortnightly.
