Eco School

Eco-Schools is a global programme engaging 19.5 million children across 67 countries, making it the largest educational programme on the planet. For nearly 25 years Eco-Schools has been empowering children to drive change and improve their environmental awareness through the simple Seven-Step framework in order to achieve the international Eco-Schools Green Flag award.

Team

Each year, pupils across the school put themselves forward to be a part of the team, with a democratic vote held to elect representatives for each class. The team comes together weekly, and the Prime Minister and Deputy lead each meeting. These meetings aim to think of ways to care for the environment and the world around us.

Our Eco-Code

Be responsible citizens

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Animals are our friends

Nature rules – spend more time outdoors enjoying it!

Water and electricity are important, turn taps and lights off

Only use what we need, don’t be wasteful

Our world is precious, save it!

Don’t be part of the problem, be somebody who makes a difference!

What we do to sustain our environment

  • We reduce, reuse, and recycle as much as we can, each classroom has paper recycling pens and energy-saving monitors. Light switches in classrooms have stickers to remind pupils to turn off lights.
  • To improve the air quality of each classroom, the Eco Team purchased air purifying plants.
  • Pupils in Lower School have planted a vegetable patch and will harvest these in the autumn to be served during lunch times.
  • For many years, pupils have fundraised to adopt endangered animals. We have raised over £1000.
  • Each week, we share eco-tips with our community through the Branwood Bee.
  • We have taken part in The Great British Spring Clean.
  • We have collected old batteries for the Duracell Battery hunt.
  • Milk bottle lids are collected and sent for recycling.
  • Recyclables and eco-friendly products are purchased, where possible.
  • Each class studies an eco-friendly topic such as plastic pollution, recycled art.
  • To offset our carbon footprint, we take part in tree planning exercises with The Woodland Trust.

Success

As of 2022, Branwood is a recognised Eco-School having achieved our first Green Flag award. As of 2024, Branwood has the highest accolade of a Green Flag with distinction. Our aim is to continue to build on this success, going from strength to strength.
