Form One

For children aged 5-6

Children in Form One build on the skills developed during the Early Years Foundation Stage. Staff in Form One understand the importance of offering the children a broad and balanced curriculum to further enhance their development.

Form One is a challenging but very exciting year for the children. Learning becomes more formal and children are encouraged to become independent and motivated learners.

They are taught in a visually stimulating environment with a range of displays showing off their hard work. Every child is unique and both learning and planning in Form One reflects this. The classroom is full of happy and enthusiastic children.

There are two members of staff in Form One and we spend our time with the children, supporting learning and reading with pupils on a regular basis. In maths, learning covers the seven areas of mathematics in addition to mechanical maths. Children discover fractions, number and place value, telling the time, 2D and 3D shapes, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In literacy, children develop their handwriting skills and learn to spell phonetically. They make their writing interesting with the use of adjectives and exciting vocabulary and a range of punctuation. As part of our 11+ curriculum, children complete weekly NVR and VR lessons to develop their skills in preparation for the senior entrance exams.

Every child is unique and both learning and planning reflect this. The mornings are dedicated to phonics, literacy and mathematics. Children learn through hands on activities and visual resources. Homework is set each night to reinforce and build on children’s learning. Other subjects in the curriculum are taught in the afternoons and include history, geography, art, science, DT, PE and RE.

The children also continue to have weekly Music, Spanish, IT and PE lessons delivered by specialist teachers. They also participate in Forest School sessions fortnightly.
